Event: Monsters of Design 2010

Monsters of Design is an annual design awards competition for young architects and/ or designers from or near the Kansas City metro area. Projects of all types and scales (architecture, interiors, products, furniture, lighting, graphics and anything else) are welcome.

Description: The theme for this event is Green by Design so bring something to eat (and share) that\’s green, local, sustainable, etc. Designers that we are, we are also asking that you bring your favorite eco-friendly product these days (one you already own or maybe a picture of one you covet!). If you purchase something to bring, feel free to take some pictures of that experience and bring them to share (we can add them to our chapter website). We hope to generate some good discussion about the green imperative and what it means for designers as both producers and consumers.

Event: IDSA KC BYOG Potluck Picnic

Please join us Saturday May 8th at Jacob Loose Park near the Rose Garden for the first IDSA KC Chapter event of the year: a pot luck BYOG (Bring Your Own Green) picnic! Events start at noon and you are welcome to bring friends, family, design groupies or gurus, local eco-heros, whomever! (Just RSVP please so we can get a feel for how many are coming.)

Event: KC Design Week

A celebration of Design to raise awareness about its value and importance in Kansas City. This week long event is designed to engage various design disciplines, the business community and general public and will include inspirational lectures, a design challenge, hands-on workshops, exhibits and self-guided tours. Design disciplines participating include: architecture, communications, fashion, graphic, industrial, interactive, interior, urban planning, sustainability.

Presenter Scott Butterfield is a Trends Consultant within the Creative Innovation and Discovery Division at Hallmark Cards, Inc.

His charge is to support, inform and inspire the creative community wiithin Hallmark. To help facilitate this mission, the Trends Group develops a yearly color and style forecast for Hallmark as well as seasonal palettes and design directions.

EVENT: Rem Koolhaas (A Kind of Architect)

EVENT: Special Screening of “Objectified”

Objectified is being featured at the Tivoli Theater as part of the Design Film Series. Objectified is Gary Huswit’s follow up to Helvetica and focuses on the people behind the products that we use everyday. He expertly interviews a great cross section of designer’s to reveal the secret world of these detail oriented creators. September 15th at 7:30.

EVENT: Elliot Noyes – “Curator of Corporate Character”

Gordon Bruce and Frederick Noyes give a presentation on the life and work of Eliot Noyes. Elliot was the first Director of Industrial Design at MoMA in the 1940’s as well as becoming A consulting Director of Design for IBM, Mobil Oil, Westinghouse and cummins Engine Company.

Presentation is September 14 at 11:30 am in Woodruff Auditorium in the KU Union. Free to the public.
